UTME Admissions

  1. Candidates intending to major in Applied zoology must have passed in the under listed ordinary level subjects at Credit level in SSCE, NECO or GCE O/L at one or two sittings: English language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics/Geography.
  2. The minimum U.T.M.E. score for admission into the Department shall be determined by the Admissions Committee.

iii.  Based upon the recommendation by the Pre-Degree Science Board, a pre-degree students who scores not less than 50 percent in each of the three subjects taken and is recommended for admission by Pre-Degree Science Board may be considered for admission into 100 level Applied zoology provided such student meets up the requirements stipulated in (i) above.

 

Direct Entry Admission

  1. The following categories of candidates shall be considered for admission into 200Level class of the degree programme, provided they also meet the requirements stipulated in (i) above.
  2. (i). Holders of Ordinary National Diploma; National Diploma or Higher National Diploma (HND upper Credit) in any of the following areas of study: Science Laboratory Technology, Nutrition, Food technology/Science, Agricultural Science or other allied courses.

(ii). Holders of intermediates Diploma of Olabisi Onabanjo University with at least lower credit in Science Laboratory in related fields.

(iii).            Holders of National Certificate of Education (NCE) with Merit/Credits in Biology and in any one of the following subjects; Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Geography, Integrated Science.

(iv).            Foreign Nationals or Nigerian who hold the General Certificate of Education GCE A/L London, the Baccalaureate from a Francophone country with principal grade in two subjects one of which must be Biology, while the other one would be from Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Geography.

INTRA UNIVERSITY TRANSFER

Only students of the Faculties of Science, Education, College of Medicine and Pharmacy, with a cumulative grade point aggregate (CGPA) of not less than 1.0 at the end of 100 l level shall be considered for transfer to 200 level Applied Zoology programme. Such candidates shall have to offer any outstanding 100 level.

INTER-UNIVERSITY TRANSFER

Students from Science-based Faculties and Colleges of other Senate recognized Universities with CGPA of not less than 2.0 may be considered for transfer to 200 level Applied Zoology.  In addition, such candidates must satisfy the matriculation requirements of the University.

MODE OF STUDY

The mode of study is full-time. The duration of study shall be eight and six semesters for candidates admitted into 100 and 200 levels respectively.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS.

To be eligible for single honours degree of B.Sc. in Applied Zoology a student must:

  • Pass the following GNS courses: GNS 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 201, 202, 203, 204, 301, 302.
  • Obtain a minimum of 96 units from 100 to 400 level courses including the above GNS courses.
  • Candidates from direct entry must pass in 82 units from 200 to 400 levels.
  • Out of these minimum of 40 units must be from 300 and 400 level Applied Zoology courses.
  • All graduating students must pass all Compulsory Courses at least at 40% level. However, candidate with a score of Applied Zoology 30% in a required course may not repeat the course.
  • Any Candidate who scores below CGPA of 1.0 in two consecutive semesters or pass less than 10.0 units at the end of the first session or 20.0 units at the end of the second session will be advised to withdraw from the University.

STUDENT WORK LOAD

The Department operates a course unit system. All students are required to select from the list of Senate-approved courses and must registered for not more than 24 units and not less than 18 units (inclusive of GNS courses) in each semester. However on application from the student, the Head of Department can approve an additional 1 unit or the Dean additional 3 units in deserving cases.

WHAT ARE THE COMPULSORY, REQUIRED AND ELECTIVE COURSES?

  1. A course tagged compulsory must be taken and passed at not less than 40% level.
  2. A course tagged required must be taken and passed at not less than 30% level.
  3. A course tagged elective must be taken but need not be passed at 40% level.  But whether passed or not, since taken, it is included in the computation of results.
  4. Note: When a compulsory course is passed at 30%, (but less than 40%), the candidate is qualifies to take the higher courses for which the course is a pre-requisite.  However, it must be repeated until it is passed not less than 40% level.

EXAMINATION

(A)      Examination shall be conducted as prescribed by the Senate. Each courses shall be examined at the end of the semesters or session in which it is taught.

(C)       Each course shall normally be examined by both theory and practical papers.

(D)       Continuous assessment shall carry not more than 30% of the overall score for each course.

ACEDEMIC REGULATIONS

  1. University Commendation: A candidate is recommended for Commendation for having passed all the compulsory/required courses in the semester with a CGPA of 4.50 and above.
  2. Faculty Counselling: A candidate is recommend Faculty Counselling for having a Current GPA of less than 1.00 in the semester.
  3. University Probation: A candidate is recommended for probation for having a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) of less than 1.00 in the semester.
  4. Withdrawal of studentship: A candidate is recommended for withdrawal for having a cumulative GPA (CGPA) of less than 1.00 in two consecutive semesters.
  5. Suspension of studentship: A candidate is recommended for suspension for failing to register in the current semester.
  6. Determination of studentship: A candidate is recommended for determination of studentship for failing to register in two consecutive semesters.

 

GRADING SYSTEM

The grading system as approved by Senate is as follows:

COMPUTATION OF GRADE POINT AGGREGATE (GPA)

This is derived by multiplying the number of units per course concerned and the grade point scored together.  The products of the different courses are summed up and divided by the total number of units is calculated by adding the previous and current GPA’s together. The sum is then divided by the sum of units ever taken by the student.

This shall include:
