Mission and Vision

The Olabisi Onabanjo University otherwise known and addressed as OOU intends to be the preeminent public research and teaching University linking the people of Ogun State to the Nation and the World. To meet the challenges of its vision, the University was established to run on multi-campuses system with campuses cited sited at the four geopolitical zones in the state namely: Ikenne at Remo, Ayetoro at Yelwa, Ibogun at Egba while the Main campus is at Ago-Iwoye in Ijebu.

As the state’s flagship comprehensive research institution, OOU primary purpose is to move forward and frontiers of human knowledge and enrich and elevate society.  The mission of the University is to:

  • Advance the community of learning by engaging in scientific research, humanistic scholarship, and artistic creation;
  • Provide a high quality educational experience to undergraduate students in a diverse learning environment – promoting the values and institutions of democracy that prepare students to lead lives of personal integrity and civic responsibility in a global society;
  • Prepare the next generations of skilled and ethical professionals by providing excellent graduate and professional education that prepares graduates to compete in a diverse world market;
  • Promote a campus environment that welcomes and honors women and men of all races, creeds, and cultures and an atmosphere that values intellectual curiosity, pursuit of knowledge, and academic freedom and integrity;
  • Conduct research, teaching, and outreach to improve human and animal medicine and health;
  • Contribute to improving the quality of life increasing agricultural productivity, protecting the environment, promoting the well-being of families, and conserving natural resources;
  • Offer a wide variety of off-campus educational and training programmes, including the use of information technologies, to individual and groups;
  • Partner with communities to provide educational, technical and cultural support to increase the livability of those communities; and
  • Partner with industry and government to improve the quality of the workplace and to serve as an engine for economic and cultural development.

Our Objectives

The objectives for setting up the Department of Microbiology are thus:

      • The objectives of the undergraduate curriculum in Physics and its Applied Physics programmes at Olabisi Onabanjo University are:(i)         To provide a solid background in Classical and Modern Physics for students with career objectives in Pure Physics, Research, Electronics, Materials Science, Computer Science, Geophysics, Medicine, diverse fields of application of Nuclear Energy, Secondary School Science Teaching, etc.(ii)       To provide balanced training in the fields of electronics and Geophysics which are considered most relevant to human and material development in Nigeria.(iii)      To provide skilled scientists capable of applying their knowledge to solve national problems in their respective field of interest.

        (iv)      To inculcate broad specific discipline in undergraduate students (independent work, resourcefulness, honesty, broad scientific outlook and team-work in scientific research)

        (v)       To ensure a high level of competence of our graduates and also increase their flexibility in fitting into diverse careers including research and development, industry and education.

        (vi)      To develop a research culture in the department in consonance with current trends in industry and research that are having direct relevance to the peculiar needs of Ogun State in particular and Nigeria in general.

        (vii)     To provide a solid academic base for the pursuit of higher degree (M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D.)

        (viii)    To identify the limitations of our students and to make real effort to provide compensating corrective measures.

        The programmes of study in the Department are:

         

        I     Pure Physics and

        II   Applied Physics which comprises Geophysics and Physics with Electronics options.

         

        Finally, the Department is committed to creating an interactive scholarly unit in which a diversity of ideas, student’s experience, individual backgrounds, and perspectives are welcomed and encouraged.

        The academic atmosphere in the Department is very conducive for learning, teaching and research and this is as a result of our strong intellectual and scientific pedigree.

        The Department complements the University in providing an enabling environment for the students’ learning and to share academic fellowship with one another and the staff. The attendance at learned conferences, workshops, symposia and seminars by both students and staff is mandatory, thereby facilitating interaction and understanding of new science techniques and discoveries. The Department welcomes diversity of ideas, students’ experiences, individual backgrounds and perspectives.
